At Avantus Aerospace, we and our family of organisations have axis to 3, 4 and 5-axis CNC machines, which enable us to offer a full range of machining services.

Within our own facilities we possess 3-axis and 5-axis capability, and we continue to develop relationships with other manufacturers to ensure that we are able to accommodate our customers’ needs without compromise.

Computer Numeric Controlled – or CNC – machining allows data to be input into a computer, which then controls the machine. The process requires more initial input than traditional machining, which requires a technician to operate it, but it is highly repeatable and provides absolute accuracy, alongside the capacity to make minor data changes after production has begun.

3-axis CNC machining

3-axis CNC milling machines are able to move along three different axes, the x-axis, which moves left to right, the y-axis which moves back to front and the z-axis, which moves up and down.  The machine can cut on all three axes simultaneously and is usually used for machining 2D parts. The part is held in position while the axes move along, milling as programmed. While offering high levels of repeatability and accuracy, 3-axis CNC machines don’t offer the complexity of other machines as they can only move up and down or side to side.

A range of materials

CNC, mills can drill or cut most materials, provided the appropriate tools are utilised. The density of the material being machined must be considered when selecting the appropriate tool and rotation speed of the cutting tool. At Avantus, we work with each customer to advise them on the most appropriate material to meet their needs in terms of both performance and ability to withstand the rigours of the aerospace and defence industries. We machine C-class and composite parts, fastenings and assemblies made from metals such as beryllium copper, aluminium, titanium and stainless steel, as well as hard plastics and allows, selected for their strength, torque and non-corrosive properties.
