Standoffs perform a range of functions in airframe production. They are used wherever there is a need to ensure space is maintained between two or more aircraft components. This could be to allow airflow between parts, to reduce friction by preventing parts from coming into contact with each other, or to increase thermal insulation. Additionally, they can be used as a way of precisely positioning screws or other fixers. They are usually threaded, meaning they can be fixed in such a way as to add to the strength or rigidity of the airframe. As such, they are usually hexagonal, to facilitate being tightened using a wrench.
